Circle crop guide
How to crop a photo into a circle without uploading it.
Use a browser-based editor to frame the subject, choose the right image format, and download a clean circular result while the source image stays on your device.
The short answer
To crop a photo into a circle without uploading it, open a local browser editor, choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP file, position the subject inside the circular frame, and export the result as PNG. A local workflow uses the browser's object URL, Canvas, and Blob capabilities to read, draw, and download the selected file. HaloCrop follows this model: the image is processed in the browser rather than sent to an image-processing server. You still need an internet connection to load the website and its normal assets, but the selected image does not enter an upload queue.
This approach is useful for profile photos, logos, product images, community avatars, and any image that should have a round edge without a white square around it.
A simple workflow
Four steps from photo to circle.
The result is easier to judge when the subject, edge, and output format are treated as separate decisions.
- 01
Choose an image
Open a JPG, PNG, or WebP from your device. You can use the photo circle crop tool when the subject needs more zoom and a dedicated framing guide.
- 02
Protect the subject
Drag and zoom until the face, product, or logo has comfortable space from the circular edge. Leave room for the destination platform's own avatar crop when needed.
- 03
Pick the format
Use PNG when the corners must be transparent. Use WebP or JPG when you need a smaller file or a solid background.
- 04
Preview and download
Check the edge against light and dark backgrounds, select the output size, and download the square circular image.
Which format should you use?
Choose the format based on what happens after the crop, not only on how the preview looks.
| Goal | Recommended format | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent corners | PNG | PNG can preserve an alpha channel outside the circle. |
| Smaller modern file | WebP | WebP is useful when the destination supports it and transparency is not required. |
| Broad compatibility | JPG | JPG works widely but cannot preserve transparent pixels. |
If the result must sit cleanly on changing backgrounds, use the transparent circle PNG workflow and inspect the corners before downloading.
What does “local processing” mean?
HaloCrop creates a temporary browser reference for the selected file, draws the crop on an HTML canvas, and turns the result into a downloadable Blob. The selected image is not sent to a HaloCrop image-processing endpoint. This is different from claiming that no network request happens at all: the browser still requests the website's HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and image assets.
You can read the product's privacy policy and review the browser primitives in the MDN object URL reference, Canvas API reference, and Blob reference.
Common questions
Can I crop a photo into a circle on my phone?
Yes. A modern mobile browser can open the editor, choose a photo, frame it with touch controls, and download the result.
Does a white background mean the image is transparent?
No. A white square can hide the fact that the corners are still opaque. Use PNG and inspect the checkerboard or contrasting background preview.
What size should a circular profile picture be?
Use the output size expected by the destination when you know it. If you need a flexible master, export a larger square and let the destination create its own smaller version.
